Morning citrus or evening amber? Votive or full-size? A practical guide to matching scent, size and wax to the moment.
Choosing a candle is really choosing a mood — and moods have rules of thumb worth knowing.
Match the scent to the hour. Bright notes (citrus, eucalyptus, white tea) belong to mornings and workspaces. Warm notes (amber, cedar, vanilla, spice) belong to evenings and rooms where people gather.
Match the size to the space. A single votive perfumes a bathroom; a living room wants a full-size candle or a cluster of three. Too small and you will wonder why you can barely smell it.
Match the wax to your values. Soy and beeswax burn cleaner and longer than paraffin, with almost no soot. If anyone in the house is sensitive to smoke, they are worth it.
When in doubt, give the gift version. A boxed set of two or three small candles lets the recipient discover their own favourite — which is why our gift sets outsell everything else in December.
And the only real mistake? Lighting a candle you love in a room you never sit in. Put the good ones where you live.
